Join us for a morning session of readings, breakfasts and kids activities to celebrate the launch of 'Breakfast with Nanay' - a children's book for kids aged 4-10 about the quiet love between a child and their Nanay (Mother).

Together in these sessions, we'll explore a heartfelt story that blends nostalgia, food-culture, and family warmth–through the words of Klyde Salcedo and illustrations by Maysie Lecciones. This weekend event is open to all–from Pinoy kids who are familiar with Filipino food, to those who are at the start of their cultural journey, as well as kids and parents from the global diaspora who are curious about Filipino traditions.
What to expect:
🧋Delicious serving of Champarado: classic Filipino breakfast of chocolate rice porridge made from glutinous rice and cacao. Toppings include: condensed milk, soy or oat milk, chocolate chips, corn flakes, coconut sprinkles, and dilis.
🧋Refreshing Sago't gulaman, a sweet, summertime Filipino drink with swirls of sago, jelly cubes, brown sugar, topped with ice.
🧋 Book reading of ‘Breakfast with Nanay’ by Klyde Salcedo
🧋 Colour your Breakfast workshop where we'll create drawings and collages of Filipino food together for you to take home.
Signed copies of 'Breakfast with Nanay' will be available for purchase on the day for $28 RRP. You can also order the book online via Magenta House Shop.
Each ticket entry is for 1 child & 1 parent/guardian. Spots are limited to enable us to invest in the hands-on nature of this kids-focused session, with fees going towards food and materials. Bios 🐣
Klyde Salcedo is a Filipina public servant, who works in natural wine and is now a children’s book writer! She lives and works on Boon Wurrung Country. Growing up in a matriarchal family, she learned that food carries stories, memories, and quiet acts of love.
Maysie Lecciones is a Filipino multidisciplinary creative based in Naarm, working across food and design. Having moved to Australia from the Philippines, she draws on childhood memories and her connection to her homeland to weave storytelling and memory into her work. She brings nostalgia to life through her illustrations for Breakfast with Nanay.
Magenta House
Step inside Magenta House, a grassroots artist-run initiative based inside a re-envisioned domestic home on Gadigal / Sydney Australia. We host programs and collaborations that platform emerging artists, experimental practices, and equitable arts ecologies. Our activities come alive through workshops, talks, communal meals, test kitchens, dialogues, soirées, reading sessions, and more. We also run a library and online shop support social ventures, publishers, and artisans across Asia and Australia. Established by arts worker Mariam Ella Arcilla in April 2023, Magenta House is a synergetic platform for ideas and encounters to ferment.
