Magenta House is honoured to host a gathering for Talaandig master artist, cultural bearer, farmer and educator Datu Waway Saway to connect with Philippines and global diaspora on Gadigal land. The Talaandig Indigenous tribe have long been caretakers of the lands and mountains of Lantapan, Bukidnon, Mindanao. Even though they continue to face ongoing land theft, cultural suppression, and marginalisation, they remain dedicated to preserving local cultures and traditions through art, music, storytelling, eco-stewardship, and social resistance.
Through his lifelong work, Datu (chieftain) Rodelio Saway—known affectionately as Waway—seeks to illuminate how Talaandig music and dance practices embody ecological stewardship, economic vitality, and cultural resilience.
Drop in anytime to Magenta House from 3pm-5pm for chats and merienda (light food) and to hear Waway impart Indigenous knowledge stories. He will also play a demo of the kubing (bamboo jaw harp), pulala (bamboo flute), and katyapi (two-string boat lute). Limited-edition bamboo flutes will also be for sale at Magenta House, with proceeds going towards Waway’s livelihood.
We welcome people who are of Filipino/a/x heritage and are interested in deepening their knowledge of Philippines culture, as well as those who are from the global diaspora or have Pinoy synergies. Our intention is to anchor the voices of archipelagic kin through kapwa relations and knowledge-transfers.

Datu Waway Saway is a revered leader within the Talaandig tribe, an Indigenous community in the Philippines celebrated for its vibrant culture and deep-rooted traditions. As a distinguished artist, musician, and elder, he is instrumental in preserving and promoting the rich culture and values of the Talaandig people. Through his creative endeavours and leadership, Waway Saway champions the importance of deepening our understanding and respect for indigenous cultures.
