Golden Mile Tower Zine

Located on Beach Road in Singapore, Golden Mile Tower is an iconic, Brutalist building that was completed in 1973 as a ‘vertical city.’Considered an early pioneer for mixed-use development, this 24-storey landmark boasted hundreds of shops, offices and residential apartments–and was once home to the largest cinema in the country. According to articles found by Tropical Futures Institute, there was even an illegal pirate radio station on the rooftop. Golden Mile was lovingly dubbed ‘Little Thailand’ for its plethora of Thai eateries and shops.

Today, Golden Mile is earmarked for demolition to make way for a 45-storey residential skyscraper. But this hasn’t stopped locals from honouring the rich cultural history of this site, with The Projector screening independent films and The Scrub selling indie merch and prints inside a former locksmith store.

To honour the history of Golden Mile Tower, The Shrub & Tropical Futures Institute have created a collectors-edition tees and zines featuring archival graphics - logos, advertisements, artworks- of the makers, businesses, and artisans that once called this cultural landmark their home.
